Developing Competitive Advantage of the SMEs
In Bangladesh, agribusiness is one of the major sectors contributing to over 18% to GDP. SEDF has been supporting agribusiness development in Bangladesh since 2002 as one of its focused sectors. It has already developed a country map identifying the overall gaps constraining the growth of agribusiness sector. Various studies and discussions with the key stakeholders have shown that Bangladesh agribusiness is suffering from many problems such as, insufficient information about markets, inadequate technical knowledge, poor local capacity to provide the services necessary to improve SME efficiency and growth, double taxation/VAT system for raw materials and finished products etc.

The study was undertaken under two broad head – Agri-Enterprise and Light Engineering in partnership with The South Asia Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF), a multi-donor funded, IFC managed initiative with a broad goal of developing viable small and medium sized, private sector enterprises in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and North East India (BBNNI).

The overarching objective of the project is to contribute to the reduction of by incorporating the strategies to increase competitiveness, performance, and growth of the SME sector, which is expected to contribute to growth and improvement in economic and social conditions. The study was intended to addresses the issue of service provisions for the above mentioned selected products/ subsectors by identifying and working with service providers who are currently offering or have potential to offer commercial services to SMEs. The key intervention would be to assist service providers in developing their products and services by providing technical assistance in their product and market development.

ChangeMaker has conducted a through study using the tools and methodologies of “Subsector Analysis and Market Assessment” together with complete “Supply and Value Chain Analysis” for identification competitive advantage and value addition of the market actors.
